Thotalagala Haputale

Overview

On the edge of the Haputale escarpment, with tea bushes falling away below and mountains rising beyond, Thotalagala Haputale is a tea planter’s house from another age. This Thotalagala plantation bungalow is one of the first planters’ bungalows in Sri Lanka, dating from the 19th century and revived to its former glory. It sits on Dambatenna Road, in the middle of a tea estate, and with only seven suites it is one of the island’s most personal luxury boutique hotels in Sri Lanka.

Each suite takes its name from a figure in Uva’s tea history, including Sir Thomas Lipton, Rev. Walter Senior, Major Rogers, George Pilkington, John Duncan, Sam Popham, and James Taylor. They are split between the original house and a newer wing. Rooms have polished wood floors, period and reproduction furniture, and four-poster beds. This Thotalagala bungalow feels more like a country house than a hotel, with two sitting rooms, a terrace, a cigar room, and about 20 acres of lawns and flower beds.

Meals are part of the stay. At Thotalagala hotel Sri Lanka, dinner is served at a 20-seat communal table, though you can eat apart, and there is no set menu: the butler discusses dishes with you. The all-inclusive plan covers meals and drinks, and guests are welcomed with a signature spiced hot chocolate. High tea can be taken in the garden of Sir Thomas Lipton’s own bungalow, which sits on the grounds. For travellers weighing Sri Lanka luxury resorts, the shared infinity pool overlooking the escarpment adds a touch of resort comfort.

The setting is the real reward. Walks lead to Lipton’s Seat, and a tour of the Dambatenne tea factory, built in 1890, shows how Ceylon tea is made. Thotalagala Haputale Sri Lanka also has sundowners at Roper’s Roost and sweeping views across the hills. Our Sri Lanka tour packages often place it between Kandy and the south coast, and we can pair it with Ella, a smart choice for luxury travel in Sri Lanka with a slower pace. Children must be 6 or older.

Before you decide, look through the Thotalagala photos on the hotel’s own site and read recent Thotalagala reviews. Our team can answer any question that comes up.

Rates depend on the suite, season, and length of stay, so we put together a personalized quote based on your travel dates and party size.
