Sri Lanka Gem Tour Packages

Summary of the Tour

Silk Way Ceylon Tours’ Sri Lanka gem tour takes you to Ratnapura, the island’s “City of Gems,” for a genuine look at gems from Sri Lanka — mine visits, gem testing with a qualified gemologist, and honest guidance for anyone considering a purchase.

Sri Lanka, One of the World’s Great Gem Islands

Few countries have a relationship with precious stones quite like Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka gems, especially its world-renowned blue sapphires, have been mined and traded on the island for over two thousand years — this is a living industry, not a tourist novelty. A proper Sri Lanka gem tour goes beyond a shop visit and takes you to where the stones actually come from.

Ratnapura: The City of Gems

Ratnapura, whose name literally translates to “City of Gems,” sits in Sri Lanka’s gem-rich south-central region and remains the real centre of the island’s gem trade. A visit here means seeing the industry as it actually operates — traditional mining pits, gravel-washing techniques passed down through generations, and a trading culture that still runs largely on personal reputation and trust.

Gem Mining and Testing, Up Close

Watching traditional gem mining firsthand — the digging, the washing, the careful sorting of gravel for a flash of colour — gives real context to the finished stones seen in shop windows. A guided gem testing session with a qualified gemologist adds another layer, showing guests how genuine Sri Lanka gems are identified and graded.

Buying Gems in Sri Lanka: What to Know

For guests interested in buying gems in Sri Lanka, our honest advice is the same we’d give any traveller: buy only from licensed, reputable dealers, and ask for an independent certificate on any higher-value purchase. The gem trade attracts its share of scams aimed at tourists, and a trustworthy operator should say so plainly rather than pretend the risk doesn’t exist.

Beyond the Gems: A Complete Sri Lanka Experience

A gem-focused trip doesn’t mean gems are all you’ll see. This itinerary can be built around Sri Lanka’s wider highlights — Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, tea country, and time on the south coast — with the Ratnapura gem experience woven in rather than standing alone.
