Exploring the 900-year-old royal city by bicycle is one of the best family days in Sri Lanka. The ruins are spread out along flat, shady paths, and the giant rock-carved Buddhas of Gal Vihara are unforgettable. Younger children can ride in a tuk-tuk or on a child seat.

Known as “Little England”, Nuwara Eliya has red-brick buildings, cool weather and plenty for children: pedal boats and pony rides at Gregory Lake, and tea estate visits where they can try plucking leaves themselves.

Ella is the family favourite in the hills. Little Adam’s Peak is an easy 45-minute walk with a big view, and watching the blue train cross the Nine Arch Bridge is a magical moment for children. A cool, high plateau with a 9 km loop walk to World’s End, where the land drops away almost 900 metres. Go early, before the mist rolls in. It’s best for older children who enjoy a proper hike of around three hours.

A sheltered, reef-protected bay with calm water, making it one of the best family beaches on the south coast from December to April. Nearby Jungle Beach is great for a short boat trip and snorkelling.
