Tekanda Lodge Ahangama

Overview

Ten acres of tea, cinnamon, coconut palms, and jungle crown a hill just inland from Sri Lanka’s south coast, and at the top sits Tekanda Lodge. Owners Charlie and Richard Pembroke found the land abandoned and overgrown in 2016, and brought back the harvests, planted hundreds of trees, and left three acres of jungle wild. The result is Tekanda Lodge Sri Lanka: a small, characterful retreat built from wood, natural stone, and thatched iluk roofs, with handmade furniture. It stands out among luxury boutique hotels in Sri Lanka for how well it blends into the landscape.

There are just six guest rooms: four in the main lodge, arranged around a courtyard, and two round cabanas in the gardens. No two rooms are alike. Tekanda Lodge Ahangama guests sleep under mosquito nets with air conditioning, rain showers, and a terrace or balcony, and some bathrooms have sink-in tubs. The views run all the way around: Koggala Lake to the west and the Indian Ocean to the south. The whole lodge can also be booked for a retreat, a celebration, or a family gathering.

At the centre of the day is the curved infinity pool. Dinner is family-style at a communal table, built around a daily-changing set menu using produce from the one-acre kitchen garden, and you can also dine on a private deck or on your verandah. Vegetarian and vegan options are offered. Morning yoga looks over the jungle, and in-room massages can be arranged. For travellers weighing Sri Lanka luxury resorts, it offers privacy, a pool, and genuine local character in one small place.

The beach is close, and the south coast is easy to explore. Kabalana Beach is about five minutes by car, with surfing lessons from December to April, and Ahangama is a short tuk-tuk ride away. Guests can take boat rides on Koggala Lake, tour a tea factory, or visit the village centre run by the Tekanda Foundation, which the owners founded. Galle Fort is about 20 km away. Our Sri Lanka tour packages often combine it with the hill country and cultural sites, a smart choice for luxury travel in Sri Lanka that balances beach days with quiet. The lodge works best for adults and children aged 6 and over.
