The best time to visit Sri Lanka from the UK is December to April for the south and west coasts, the hill country and the Cultural Triangle, and May to September for the east coast. Because the island has two monsoons that arrive at different times, there is good weather somewhere in Sri Lanka in every month. This guide covers the weather month by month, the best season for beaches, safaris and whales, and which regions suit each UK school holiday.
For UK travellers, Sri Lanka has one big advantage over many long-haul destinations: it’s a year-round island. When it’s grey and cold at home, the south coast beaches are at their sunniest. When British schools break up for summer, the east coast takes over. The trick is simply knowing which side of the island to head for.

For a classic first trip that combines culture, tea country, safari and the south coast beaches, the best season to visit Sri Lanka is January to March, which conveniently falls in the depths of the British winter.
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, and understanding them is the key to planning:
“Monsoon” rarely means all-day rain. Even in the wetter months, many days start bright and the rain clears quickly. Coastal temperatures stay between about 27°C and 31°C all year, while the hill country is pleasantly cooler at around 15°C to 22°C.

This is peak season on the south and west coasts. Sri Lanka weather in December is typically hot and sunny, with calm seas from Bentota to Tangalle, which makes it ideal for Christmas and New Year. January and February are even more settled, and the Sri Lanka weather in February is often the best of the year for combining beaches, the hill country and Sigiriya in one trip.
Sri Lanka in March is hot, dry and less busy than the peak weeks, a great choice for Easter. In April, temperatures peak and afternoon storms start to build, but mornings are usually clear. Mid-April brings the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, when local families travel and celebrate.
UK summer is east coast season. The Sri Lanka climate in August is dry and sunny around Trincomalee and Pasikudah, while the southwest sees passing showers. It’s also the best time for the Elephant Gathering at Minneriya and surfing at Arugam Bay. The south coast stays warm and very green, with fewer visitors.
The inter-monsoon brings the most changeable weather, with heavy afternoon storms in many regions. Even so, the Sri Lanka weather in November improves steadily on the south coast as the month goes on, making late November a good-value time to travel before the Christmas peak.
Not really. There’s simply a better and a less ideal time for each region. The most changeable weeks are usually October and early November, when the inter-monsoon brings storms to both coasts at once. Even then, the Cultural Triangle and the south often have plenty of sunshine between showers, and the countryside is at its greenest. The bigger mistake is choosing the wrong coast: planning a July beach week in Bentota rather than Trincomalee, for example.
