Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Sigiriya: Though different interpretations exist, according to Rmayana and mythologies, some believe that Sigiriya, majestic rock fortress in central Sri Lanka,  was Ravana’s palace. When Sita was held captive by Ravana, he had used this as a place to hide Sitha. The UNESCO has now declared this as a World Heritage Site, considering  its rich royal and mythological heritage with ancient frescoes, water gardens, and intricate stone carvings.

5. Sita Kotuwa, Hasalaka:  This location “Sita Kotuwa” means Sita’s fortress. It is believed this was one of the places where Sita was imprisoned by Ravana. Ruins in this area and the legends strongly support the connection of this location with Ramayanaya epic.

Sita wanted to prove her innocence and purity to Rama and decided to perform fire ordeal (Agni Pariksha).  Divurumpola temple is the place where Sita performed fire ordeal.  Divurumpola in Sinhala language translates as “place of oath” into English. Its large open, barren areas filled with red soil is quite remarkable and strange when compared to the lush greenery in the surrounding area. According to wide spread myths, the barren land in Ussangoda is believed to be the place where Rama used “Vajrayudha” (a powerful weapon), and said to be the spot where Hanuman’s tail set fire to the land to burn down Ravana’s kingdom.

Rumassala mountain is situated in the Rumassala National Park located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka and an area covered by a beautiful lush greenery with rich biodiversity and a large variety of plant species. This part of the island is famous for its serene beaches and picturesque landscapes. According to legend, Rama’s brother Lakshmana, was seriously wounded during the battle between two armies, and the herb “Sanjivani” could revive him. Therefore, Hanuman was sent to fetch Sanjivani. As Hanuman couldn’t identify the exact plant, he had lifted the entire mountain and brought it to Lanka. Rumassala is believed to be the part of the mountain that Hanuman carried fell into the sea.

16. Kelaniya Temple, Kelaniya: According to Ramayana, Rama and his army after arriving in Lanka, had looked for a place to perform rituals before starting the battle against Ravana. The legend reveals that Rama had performed pujas (ritual prayers) here and sought blessings for victory in the battle. The legend mentions that Vibhishana, Ravana’s brother who had supported Rama to defeat Ravana, was crowned Lanka’s king after the battle and the coronation occurred in this site.

17. Munneshwaram Temple: it is believed that at this place, Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva, to remove the “Brahmahatya Dosha” which he got after killing King Ravana.
